June Employment Results

Employers added 850,000 workers in June according to the most recent jobs report by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The unemployment rate was 5.9 percent, compared to 5.8 percent in May. This was the biggest monthly jobs gain since August of 2020, when the economy added 1.6 million jobs.

U.S. employment is rebounding. The hospitality and leisure sector grew the strongest, with 343,000 additional jobs. More than half of these openings were at restaurants and bars. Municipal governments added 155,000 jobs, and positions within state government offices increased by 75,000. Private education added 39,000 jobs.

The “jobs news brought us something to celebrate,” said President Biden. “Competition in the market doesn’t just give workers more ability to earn higher wages,” he said. “It gives them the power to demand to be treated with dignity and respect in the workplace. More jobs, better wages. That’s a good combination.”
